I have been putting off having a smear test for years, but have booked one for thursday. I couldn't sleep last night because I am so worried about it. Everytime I think about it I feel sick.. I think it is because it is my first so don't know what to expect. What is it like? Does it hurt?

Firstly don't worry about a smear test as it does not hurt a tad uncomfortable but not painful.
The nurse places a mental type object I think it's called a clamp within your vagina just to open you up a bit inside , no worse feeling then a tampon being inserted. Then they scrap some cells from inside. Slight tugging feeling but definitely not painful.
I do understand how you feel, it's more embarrassing for me having to spread my legs and have my private parts on show. I have had quite a few smears tests done and would never miss one as they are very important. The nurses are so reassuring as they know how we feel as they have to have smear tests themselves.
