Question about Mirena side effects and your experience with it?

Hi all. I recently had my ParaGard (copper) IUD removed, and I'm going in to have a Mirena IUD put in in its place. My doctor gave me the information booklet about it, but I am more interested in personal experience with Mirena. What are your periods like? What are the major side effects you experienced after having it put in (and did they subside after the first few months)? Has it been effective for you in preventing pregnancy? Anything else you care to share would be helpful, too!

Thanks

Answers:

I have had Mirena for a year, and I absolutely love it!

Insertion hurt a little, but not too bad. Some doctors offer to numb the cervix before insertion. If they offer, accept. If not, take some pain medicine before you go. I had some cramps and spotting for a week or so (like menstrual cramps, ibuprofen took care of it). Some people spot for the first 3-6 months, but I didn't. I haven't had a period since insertion! I do still get some mild cramps monthly, but that is it. My husband complained about the strings poking him for a month or so (until they wound up). I haven't had any problems, though.

I highly recommend it. If you have any specific questions, contact me through my profile. I would be happy to help any way I can!
