Answers:

Many girls feel rather confused when the first period arrives, so I wouldn't worry too much on that account. Part of it may be because she's getting the idea from you that it's not something to feel joyful about. Your attitudes have a lot of impact on how they feel about it. "A really sucky thing" isn't the most encouraging description, you know? If you didn't give her any of the positive aspects of being a young woman, then she would naturally have a rather unimpressed outlook. I made it a point to take each of my girls out to celebrate the first one, to celebrate my daughter being a young woman. That way it was a matter for happiness, a rite of passage as it were. They are all somewhat embarassed about the matter because it is so strongly associated with sex, and anything on those lines will embarass them to speak with parents. They don't want to think of us that way any more than we feel comfortable seeing them in that light. You might can do something to take the edge off things by doing a belated celebration, just to two of you out to eat and maybe shop. While you are out, you can then broach the subject on neutral ground and let her know it's okay. Also be sure you stress that your ears won't fall off, no matter what she says or asks about. That you would rather give her the straight up truth on matters than have her find out the hard way or get some stupid info from a friend. Then I think I'd just let her sit in peace a while to sort things out for herself. And for what it's worth, welcome to the parents of an adolescent club. If you think periods can stink, just wait until you meet teenage hormonal heaven. That first year while the cycle gets established and settled can be a real roller coaster ride for you both.
