It's different for everyone, so finding an exact answer for you is difficult. It's common for a lot of girls to only see some spots of blood when they start their first period. For other girls, however, it's possible to have a heavy menstrual flow for their first time. You'll notice when you start because you'll see some colored discharge either in your underwear or when you wipe after going to the bathroom. Menstrual blood can be a light pink color, bright red, dark red or brown. As far as menstrual pains? They are nothing more than cramping pains in your lower abdomen caused by your uterus contracting. Not everyone gets cramps and the people who DO experience cramping may not get them every month!

you'll know when you get your first period because you'll bleed. not everyone gets menstrual pains. they are kind of a crampy feeling in the lower stomach area and sometimes in the lower back

ur first period will be brown colour, i didnt get cramps on my first few ones, but they hurt like hell and no, not every 1 gets cramps

you'll know. there'll be a fair amount of blood, not just a little spot. and as for cramps, not eveyone gets them, some people only get them at night or during the day.

Before your first period you'll probably get discharge or small spots of blood for a while. You'll know you've started your period when the bleeding gets heavier and lasts for a few days. Menstrual pains are just cramps in your stomach that can happen just before or during your period. Some people get menstrual pains, some don't, and for some people they're quite painful, and for others they're just uncomfortable.

I'm really sorry to hear that your mum is ignoring you that's awful.

You will have a mark in your panties/knickers (sorry not sure which country you are in) and sometimes you will experience cramp. I think once it happens you just know.

I read a book called 'Are you there God it's me Margaret,' so I had an idea of what to expect.

You can start your period from as young as nine years old.

I have posted a link below that I think will help you.

Good luck and welcome to womanhood!

When I first got mine I saw brown (which later I found out was old blood) spots in my panties. When I got it again it became more reddish looking. Some people don't get menstrual pains (luckie :-P) But I get extreem pains during mine. It's like a pain in your lower abdomen and sometimes back. When you feel it you will know the difference. It's not like a tummie ache trust me. Get you some pads to protect yourself. take some of hers. She will get the hint later. Ask an auntie if it is still confusing for you.

Congrats! Getting your first period is one of many steps into womanhood. Not all girls have their periods at the same age, though. Most first periods are light and cramp free, I assume that is why you're asking. Be sure to get some feminine products to take care of it, if you have. I reccomend pads for the first year of your period, and tampons if pads make you feel uncomfortable, or you play sports.

PS, it's a bummer your mom isn't open to talk about these things....mine was the same way. I ended up telling my dad the first time I got my period, awkward!

How old are you?

normaly, girls start their period at age of 12. Some earlier, and some later.
Carry with you always a femenine pad.

Actually, you may not know when until you get it. May be you'll feel like like cramps in your stomach. Little pains.

All girls differ with the time they start their period....I was 14 myself....anywhere between 11 & 15ish would be a normal age.....You will know when you get it coz you will bleed a little & you will probably feel a little strange emotionally but it passes.....I think all women get menstural pain to a degree but some get it worse than others...they are cramps which are actually the feeling of the lining detatching from the uterus
wall....these remains are the period blood...Don't stress about it...you'll be hanging for it to come then you won't want it at all!!! But all of us go thru it & its fine...just a shame that your mum isn't very helpful tho............

u'll kno, I've got mine a few weeks ago and first it was all brown and I was like "what the heck?" I did'nt kno what that was all about but I kinda thought maybe I was getting my first period and then l8r on I saw a lot of blood and I called my mom and she told what 2 do and yup =)
