There are a few forms of longer-term birth control. The first are the rod-like implants that go under the skin in your arms- these release hormones that, over time, prevent pregnancy. Another, shorter term option is the depo shot, which is an injection taken every few months which also works as effective birth control. While taking this shot, some women do lose their periods. Another option is called an IUD. The copper-T style IUD lasts 12 years, but it can make your periods even heavier. However, the mirena IUD lasts five years, and produces drastically lighter periods in most women.

All of these options include a small amount of pain, but is not severe.

It doesn't stop your periods, It doesn't hurt. But and this is a freakingly cool but, my friend has one and it glows in uv light, like a beacon to all men. It's quite frankly awesome.
