What is the woman's "hymen"? Is it important?!

Question: I have heard that things like tampons and horseback riding can break the hymen. Is it bad to break before sex? Do all women have it? Why do you need it? PLEASE TELL ME!!!

Gymnastics can do it just as easily as horseback riding or falling onto the bike seat. It can tear all at once, in which case you'd probably notice it, or it can tear a little bit at a time, and you wouldn't notice it.

The hymen is completely unimportant and completely overrated---unless you are unfortunate enough to live in one of those backward nations where it's still considered a sign of virginity, or you have a fiance with those ignorant notions.

It doesn't really serve a purpose. I think it's a vestige of something that might have been important once. Like the appendix. It might have served a purpose at one time, but nobody is sure exactly what that might have been.

all women are born with it.

Your hymen is a wall of skin or more particuularly a membrane...it is quite normal for it to break before any sexual contact due to rough sports etc in the old days checking to see if a woman had a hymen determined if she was a virgin

It is a membrane around the outside of your vagina. I don't think it really make any difference whether you break it before sex or not. Exercise, tampons and many more things can break it. It doesn't make any difference to your health. I think it is sopposed to keep out dirt and stuff. Most women have it, by as time goes on some women are starting to "adapt" and no longer have one.

the hymen is a thin muscular layer of tissue that blocks the inside of the vagina . . . also called the virgin knot. . . . .all women are born with it and it breaks during sex. . . . it also breaks due to strenous muscle exercises . . . . the hymen is a sign of virginity and is usually considered a sign of purity . . . but it has no bodily functions i know of. . . .

It's a thin protective membrane that partialy covers the vaginal wall. It's safe if a tampon or horse riding breaks it. No need to worry darl. All women have it from birth. It used to determine virginity

Many women have their hymen torn or worn down just from active daily living years before they first have sex. And some girls are born with out a hymen.

And you don't have to worry about it. The hymen is just a residual membrane tissue left over from when your reproductive organs were forming and doesn't have a purpose. Best wishes :)

Edit: btw your hymen has nothing to do with virginity. A virgin is someone who has not had sexual relations with someone else. Period.

Thin membrane partially covering the vaginal opening. I don't think it has any known purpose although there are some theories. Many things can break it including the things you mention and also having sex. It's not bad if it breaks at any time...but it can hurt a bit. Doesn't matter whether it breaks from sex or before, doesn't affect virginity or anything. It's possible yours has broken if you do gymnastics. I have heard some women are born without one but read elsewhere that was a myth so I'm not sure, I expect most or all are born with a hymen though.

It can't get more illustrative than this... check it out!:
