Severe Menstrual Cramps. HELP!?!

Question: Around every 6 months or so, my menstrual cramps cause an extreme amount of pain that lasts about 2 hours when making a BM. I am in such pain that I become very faint, am screaming in pain, dripping in sweat, very difficult to speak or hold my selfup if not leaning on something, etc The pain eventually goes in waves and slowly dissapates and I begin to shiver from feeling very cold.

WHAT IS THIS? my gyn said it was normal (?!) and gave me as perscription for oxy-codine (THATS NOT NORMAL!)

I have the same issue. But this happens to me with every period - I normally end up in the bathroom for 4-6 hours in pain.

I've been told to keep my bowel as empty as possible when it's period time. Period cramps can often FEEL like you have to make a bowel movement, so you push and push out poo that is WAY up inside you. - there is no need to do that. it only FEELS like you need to poo! - a nurse told me that at the hospital.

To through my cramps, I put a pillow behind my back against the toilet so it's comfy. And I bring my laptop into the bathroom with me for something to keep my mind busy, and not focus on the pain.

I also bring in a bucket so I can put my feet up on it.

I take off all my clothes and bring in a blanket or towel to cover myself with.

I do all of that to make myself more comfortable.

Nothing takes away the pain for me, but it's always good to be comfortable, right?

It also mentally helps that I constantly remind myself that the pain WILL go away - for sure !

Sorry you have to go through this :( *hugs*

you have your period

I'm afraid this can be normal for some people
Have you tried going on the pill? That way you can control your periods, if you're even going to have them. Or the contraceptive injection, that can stop periods all together.

All I can suggest is strong pain killers, lots of rest, warm baths and hot water bottles.

Good Luck

get a second opinion. sounds pretty uncaring on the doctor's part...a good doctor will ask you to keep a diary for a couple months and track every symptom, run tests and then determine the course of action.

I used to suffer the same symptoms. Are birth control pills an option for you? They would eliminate this discomfort.

Also, some suggest that changes to your diet can help. I found this on line:

A PCRM study, led by Neal Barnard, M.D., took a close look at the effect of diet on menstrual pain, following 33 women aged 22 to 48. One group was instructed, initially, to eat a low-fat, vegan diet for two months. They consumed vegetables, grains, fruits, and legumes, with no restrictions on quantity. All animal products were avoided, as well as added oils, fried foods, nuts, avocados, and olives, to create a diet made up of approximately 10 percent fat.

The results were significant. "After I changed my diet, things improved dramatically," said one study participant who had previously endured up to ten days of discomfort each month. "In the week preceding my period, I experienced virtually no premenstrual symptoms."

Hang in there!

Get checked for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). The symptoms you are feeling are very common with this disorder. It is treatable (but not CURABLE) and manageable. I have PCOS and suffered for years with mind-blowing pain during my cycles, which only came about 4 times per year!. It wasn't until I was reading an article in a magazine a few years ago that I first heard of this condition. A good website for more info on this disorder is www.soulcysters.com. Without knowing more info, and basing this next bit of advice SOLELY on my own medical treatment, look into getting on birth control. This will regulate your menstrual cycles (if you have very irregular cycles) and will also greatly reduce the amount of pain you have during menstruation. Again, this obviously depends only on your reproductive goals, personal beliefs, etc. Finally, look into finding a new doctor. The pain you are feeling is NOT NOT NOT normal! Good luck! :)

awww i used to be exactly the same!!! I also got really bad migraines and would vomit. By GP put me on the pill and once my body became regular with the pill I was told to skip my period every month and allow myself to have one every year. Extreme i know but im a zillion % better for it. I only have to suffer that once a year now and even then its not as bad.

Talk to another Doctor about the pill and see if you also can skip your periods. Some people think its bad for your body but i've been feeling great and i've had no problems at all. But until then all i can suggest is pain killers, hot water bottle, PJ's and chocolate!!lol
Good luck!! :-)

This happens to me -maybe even more often. Your gyn said it was normal... so it is.

do you drink tea or any tea based products?
if you do, you better stop, tea is bad for you when you have your period.

to help ease the pain:
-try taking luke warm baths before you sleep (it helps)
-dont get youself cold, make sure your warm (cold makes the pain worst)
-try taking FEROUS SULFATE (its a med that helps so you wont become anemic or nauseus), take it an hour before you go to bed (2 pills). dont take it in the morning, you'll only feel sick. Its a med for the blood, in a way it helps ease the pain.
-dont drink tea during you period
-dont drink/eat sour stuff (citrus, pineapple etc.)
-drink lots of water (room temperature, not cold)

all this works for me
just like you, i experience severe menstrual cramps (almost in the verge of crying)
