Can i Doctor give you birth control without giving you a preganacy test first?!

Question: I went to the Doctor to get on birth control and to get a physical check up .I wanted to get a preganacy test done first but a friend told me to not ask for one because they automatically have to do one before the give me the birthcontrol, and if i were preganant... the dr. would have told me and woould nt have gave me the pills. Is this true??. While I was there getting my fully check up, The first thing that I had to do was urine in a cup. Was that the preganacy test? I am afraid that I could be preganant while taking the birth control pill? Also, can DR.'S tell if youre preganant no matter how few the weeks are unlike the home preganancy test?

I never personally had a pregnancy test before given a birth control prescription....and I've been through 4 prescriptions!! I was given a PAP smear and a pelvic exam before given a prescription though. I went through 3 prescriptions from my regular gp (he seemed to know right off the bat that I would be an 'odd' case with the birth control pill...and boy was he correct!) due to a lot of side effect problems (serious ones)...and then he referred me to a gyno. Went to see the gyno, talked everything over with him and at this point, the third prescription I was on from my gp was starting to really mess me up so my gyno gave me another prescription and did a pelvic exam (due to the fact that both doctors believe I also have endometriosis). As of the second month of my 4th prescription, I was suffering from even more serious side effects and just yesterday was told to not continue. I already have an appt booked with my gyno for June (we were supposed to at that point evaulate how I was doing on the current prescription and possibly change over to 3 months of the pill before a period break but that's obviously not happening!) to talk about next steps as far as what to do about my current problem.

Just like the home pregnancy test, the doctor tests for the hcg hormone level...this is the hormone that will show up on any pregnancy test if you are pregnant. Doctors can do it one of two ways....either through a urine sample or blood sample. It is said that they are a bit more accurate than a home pregnancy test, but I think it all depends on what stage of pregnancy you are in (in the beginning there is such a low hcg level it can be really difficult to detect no matter what test is done).

as a nurse, i always here this question! We also check your urine for pregancy and protein...if you are pregnant it will be picked up and ur dr will inform u straight away.....if not u will be given the birth control pills...its just a precaution hun

yeah the nurse is right. however, wen i went to be put on contraception - my dr gave me the prescription and almost forgot to tell me not to start it till my period(to c if i was preg)..he assumed i knew that...its a good job he caught me as i left...i was pregnant.
