I was on it. They told me to use an alternative method such as a condom for the first week, but after that is fine to go without one. But I read somewhere it starts working within 24 hours. But still stay safe and wait that week. As for side effects... it is highly known for weight gain. I was on it for 8 months and stopped because of the weight gain. Also if causes vaginal dryness that makes sex uncomfortable. And they say not to be on it for more than 2 years. Some clinics will stop giving it after that time frame because it causes bone density loss. And after using it and then going off, fertility takes a while to come back. I'm sorry for no websites, too lazy to look them up for you. But I did my research for getting on it.

I got the depo injection twice. My doctor told me I could start having unprotected sex the minute I got home.
The side effects you will get from it fall in to 3 categories:
1. Uncontrollable menstrual bleeding (me!) You will either spot on and off for the duration of the 3 months the needle is in effect for (some people go longer than 3mths but thats just an average), others bleed heavily for the majority of the 3mths.
2. No periods at all for 3mths.
3. Weight gain, (caused from water retention) and /or acne.

As with most types of birth control there are side effects for everything. It's up to you to decide whether the pros and cons are worth it.
Good luck with your decision and I hope Ive helped.

I began Depo eight years ago so I don't remember how long it took to become effective. After my second injection my periods stopped. I tool Depo every thirteen weeks for six and a half years. During that time I had to have a bone density scan to ensure there were no ill effects there. I gained a lot of weight (and I mean a LOT), lost hair and grew hair on my face. I had to take HRT and that has helped, but slowly. In the eighteen months since my last injection I have only had one period and no idea when it may return. I strongly suggest finding an alternate form of birth control.....not having a period did not outweigh the side effects.

Oh please don't get this shot!

Too many women suffer very serious health issues because of the shot.

My doctor told me, when I got this, that it takes a week to be fully effective (at the 99% effectiveness of the depo provera shot, you CAN and women DO get pregnant on the shot!).

I was on it, and I'd never recommend it to anyone.

PLEASE do not get this shot (or the next one if you already got it).

Read the reviews here:

and google "depo provera lawsuit" before doing anything regarding this shot.

I was on Depo for 3 years and everything was fine. I gained a little bit of weight, but I think in a lot of people it's gives you a larger appetite so as long as youre careful and exercise you should be fine.

The problems started when I came off it. I heard about the risks of oseoporosis and increased chances of cancer so wanted to try something else. I was advised to not take my last injection leave it a few months and then go back to arrange the pill. Since I've come off it, I've lost all my energy, am having ridiculous mood swings (ecstatic to depressed in 20 minutes), stomach cramps so bad sometimes I can't stand up straight. Following on from this, I started having dizzy spells and blurred vision - all apparently from the sudden drop in hormone levels from not taking Depo.

I'd advise you to stay away from it - you have to realise as well, I was one of the lucky ones who didn't get any symptoms whilst on it - if you DO get symptoms, you're stuck with them for 3 months as you can't get it out of your body.

On the plus side, I'm not pregnant either!
