Doctor told me I better go on Weight Watchers for my own good?!

Question: A friend and I both have the same doctor. I go in to get a check up, the doctor weighs me and it says im 5'7, 177 pounds. She sits me down matter of factly and says i think you really need to go on Weight watchers. It will help you lose weight. I told my friend about it who also goes to this woman doctor and she weighs about 260 pounds and the woman never said a word to her about her weight. Do you agree I need to go to weight watchers and should she have told me that , also why do you think she never mentioned it to my friend considering shes close to 100 pounds larger?

According to the BMI calculator I used, you're overweight. I'd worry about myself, and not my friend. Your doctor is right, and this is why doctors rarely confront their patients about needing to lose weight.

Maybe your friend said something to the doctor about how she knows she needs to lose weight. You don't know what else happened during her consultation.

Weight Watchers is a good group to join if you don't have the wherewithal to lose weight on your own. You might give it a try. You may not have health problems now, but remaining overweight will put you at risk of diabetes and heart trouble.

well basically she is just trying to save your life

either she really think thats you can gain more weight

or she just thinks your fat...lose a few pounds

It probably never came up to your friend because it was probably "big pink elephant in the room" kind of obvious. Some doctors tend to be really careful about mentioning things like that, because some patients do not react well to being told they're fat.

Odd they mentioned "Weight watchers" instead of a balanced diet, or something similar. That makes it sound less like sound advice and more of a prickish remark.

THe doctor may see something other than a weight issue there and is trying to help you fix it without medication. Maybe high cholesterol or something. Everybody is different. Maybe the doctor HAS said something to your friend but she chose not to listen. If you think it's best for you try it, if you don't then don't go.

Do you have any health problems that your friend doesn't such as diabetes or high blood pressure? At your height and weight it would help your health if you lost some. Also, no one is on their A-game everyday and your doctor may have simply neglected to say something about it to your friend. She may have been distracted by a question your friend asked and then forgot to mention it.

wow ummm try going to a different doctor no doctor should be so flat out i mean mine talked siad io needed to loosea few poulds and gave me a diet pan ... wasnt so brutal lol i just personally do not think that is fright ....

I hate when doctors tell me that I need to lose weight. Their idea of "healthy" is a dang skeletal outline.. Whenever they say something like that to me I tell them off. When I go in there, I need to know why something is in pain; I do NOT visit a doctor to be lectured!
Doctors aren't gods. They are people too, and they have opinions. If a doctor says something out of place like that, don't stand for it! I'm serious.
Losing weight is totally your decision. It's also your friend's decision. Body shape is a personal preference; it should not be this "social rule" that everyone tries to manipulate into your head. As long as you know the facts about your weight (you are both considered "overweight", by the way. Your friend is very overweight, but you are not doing so bad)..
Don't take what the doctor said seriously (which is a weird thing to say..). What she said was totally out of place and she had no right to say something like that.
