It is possible to be diagnosed with PCOS even though you do not have a relative with it. It is more common in women that have a mother/sister with it...but it does not mean that your mother had/has to have it.

I guess its a possibility but how were you diagnosed? Did you have a laporoscopy? The only real way they can definitively diagnose this is by looking at your ovaries. Many times doctors will diagnose you with this when they have no other ideas, and it's not always correct. I would get a second opinion.

I'm not a doctor, but I'm not sure there's enough research on this yet for us to know. They're still learning a lot about PCOS, and right now it's identified based on a whole set of symptoms rather than on any one underlying cause. In fact, they're not sure what the underlying cause of PCOS is. So who knows?

By the way...PCOS has been misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all in lots of women for many years. Plus, not all women are willing to talk about it, because the symptoms can be pretty embarrassing. So if you've been diagnosed with it now, there might very well be a female in your family who has it too but either doesn't talk about it or doesn't realize it. Think about it...do you have any aunts who have to wax facial hair off? Who maybe have a particularly difficult time losing weight? Or who have extremely thinning hair? One might have PCOS.
