Why is it that?!

Question: when I was in my 20's I could go out and drink on a weekly basis and quit no problem. My last drink was when I was 27. I am 35. But, I can't quit smoking cigarettes. Could someone explain that please? Thanks for your input.

It's probably because the perceived physical impact is less. When you drink, it affects your stomach, your balance, your vision, etc, and in many cases, the way you feel the next morning. Cigarettes, on the other hand, just alter some of the air you inhale, and there are no noticeable effects to your ability to drive or walk and you don't get a hangover the next day. So, in essence, alcohol was easier to quit because it has lots of short-term negative impact, whereas smoking does not. It's short-term negatives that program your brain to avoid something, not things that happen years later. Monarch butterflies use this same principle in an altruistic form of self-defense--if a bird eats a monarch butterfly it vomits shortly afterwards, and then becomes averse to eating monarch butterflies, so the next ones it encounters are safe. Hope that makes sense. :-)

because drink doesnt get addictive as easily as cigarretes

Probably because nicotine is more addictive than alcohol.

You also probably smoke more than you drink...you smoke through out the day and only drank on a weekly basis. The more you do something the harded it is to quit.

nicotine is harder to get away from then drinks are i guess

in my own perspective...i think smoking is hard to quit because its so habitual..after you eat if you dont have that cigarette its like whats missing...in the car when your driving down the road and you dont have the cigarette to occupy your right hand...its once again whats missing..if you can get those little things out your mind it could make it a lot easier i quit for 3 months..but back at it now...its really hard to kick...as well as how addictive is the nicotine is..basically its more a mental thing to quit..find something to do instead as a ritual..rather than smoke...
