When I order cantact lens online , are BC and DIA important?!

Question:

When I order cantact lens online , are BC and DIA important?

I've using a certain contact lenes recommended by my doctor but now they are discontinued. on the box it says BC 8.70 and DIA 14.50 . I've looked for other contacts to match this BC and DIA and I couldn't find one . does it have to be exact match?

Answers:

When you get contact lenses, they do certain measurements so that the lenses fit 'right'. The refraction is the power. That's the -2.00 or whatever.

The BC is the base curve. The base curve is the curve of the lens on the inside. It's supposed to fit against your eye, so the curves should pretty much match up. The problem is that if they match of exactly, the lens will suck onto the cornea and get stuck, won't let tears get underneath it, won't move so there's irrigation of the epithelium, etc. The diameter or DIA is how wide the lens is.

When they use trial lenses, they try a lens on, let it settle, then look at it. They see how it moves when you blink. If it moves too much, it's too flat. It'll wash off your eye with just your own tears or dislocate up under the lid or out. If it's too steep, it'll get sucked onto the cornea as said above.

So if you haven't been to an optometrist, which is where I'd go for contacts, cuz that's what they do more than ophthalmologists, you need to go and get remeasured. Some of the newer lenses may have the same curve, but being made out of softer or firmer material, will 'ride' differently. You really don't want these lenses not fitting 'right'. So take the time, and the $ and treat your eyes to a good fitting, a good exam. Go to the movies NEXT month.
