Answers:

Hey Shy Guy – No, you don’t need to worry about contact lenses affecting your chances of being a future candidate for LASIK. Contact lenses can “mold” the corneal surface, which changes the corneal curvature and may lead to a change in your prescription. We ask patients coming in for their LASIK consultation to stop wearing contact lenses at some stage prior to their appointments. This is because in time, the cornea returns to its natural shape and size. The time it takes for your cornea to return to its natural shape depends on the type of contact lens worn. For example, soft lenses need to be taken out a minimum of 24 hours before the consultation, while rigid gas permeable lenses need to be taken out 4 weeks in advance.

With regard to age, patients can typically have the procedure starting at the age of 18. By this age the eyes are done growing and changing so laser eye surgery can be performed safely. If you are 17 years old you could still be a candidate, but you’ll need parental consent. It’s important to remember that everyone is different, so you’ll still need to find out if you are a candidate.

Hope that helps,

No, that is not true. It is perfectly fine to wear contacts and then get lasik.

Usually, it's recommended that you have stopped growing and developing before you get lasik. If your eyes are still getting worse, then wait until they plateau.
