Jacob, it's definitely from holding your breath. Which is unsafe to do with any exercise in which there is a sudden great effort.
I learned about this from the gym trainer, who would come up to people who were holding their breath while lifting a weight or raising the plates on a machine. He would explain how this causes your blood pressure to rise, sometimes to dangerous levels, and how important it was to break the habit. He even mentioned bloodshot eyes and bloody noses as a result--but the bigger risk is a stroke.
Stop doing it. The moment you realize you're doing it, exhale.
