This really depends on your prescription. The doctor usually has some on hand if the prescription is fairly common. My friend's RX -2.50 freshlook lenses for both eyes with no astigmatism is a common prescription. He can typically walk out with his lenses after an eye appointment. My prescription is a less common. My right eye is -.50 and I choose not to fill it because it is so low. My left eye is plano -1.75 axis 40 in purevision toric. My prescription has never been in stock because it is less common.
Disposable soft contacts aren't made for your eyes, they come in standard perscriptions. If you have something fairly common then the optican may have a stock of them and will be able to give you a trial set straight away otherwise they have to order some from the manufacturers which is normally a couple of days.
You say you aer going for your 2 yearly check . You need a sepearte appointment for a contact lens fitting as contact lens perscriptions are different and they have to be fitted. If you haven't booked this alongside your normal eye test teh optician will book you in for later. With a trial you are given a couple of lenses to see if they suit you. sometimes a particular lenses won't suit you and they'll have to try another one. If they do suit you then you can wear the lens for as long as it is designed to be worn for - normally a day/fornight /month. After that the lens is thrown away. Lenses these days are disposable so you have to pay for them every month. The optician will keep trying lenses until they find one that suits you. sometimes this is the first time but not always.
