This is called the adaptation phase of wearing contact lenses!. This harkens back to the 60's and 70's when most contacts were either the old hard contacts or the relatively low oxygen permeable soft contact lenses!. Slowly increasing your wearing time allowed the eye to adjust to a decrease in available oxygen!.

With the contacts we have today there really isn't much a reason for putting a patient through an extended adaptation phase!. Today's soft lenses and even the gas permeable hard contacts allow almost as much oxygen to the eye as when you are not wearing a contact lens!. For this reason, we really don't recommend an adaptation phase in our office for the purpose of oxygen and eye health!. Sometimes it is needed, though, if a patient is having a little trouble getting used to the COMFORT of the contact lens!. I have no problem allowing a new contact lens wearer to wear their contacts the first day for as long as they are comfortable!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

They just want your eyes to get used to the contacts, personally if you feel no discomfort after 3 hours I would continue to wear them for the rest of the dayWww@Answer-Health@Com

To make sure there are no adverse effects, allergies, irritation, etc!. If you wear them all day the first day and irritate your eyes it could be months before you are able to wear them again!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

to get ur eyes use to the changeWww@Answer-Health@Com
