Opthomologist is an eye MEDICAL specialist. Deals with issues like eye disease or irritations, and any medical concerns.

Optometrist, is a specialist that deals with primarily eye relation vision problems, like the needing of glasses.

Think about it this way, and optometrist is like a family doctor (GP), and a Opthomologist is like a Specialist doctor that you have to get a referral to see.

An ophthalmologist (note the spelling) is a medical doctor who specializes in care and diseases of the eye, including vision problems.

An optometrist specialized in vision care and vision correction.

opthomologist are MD doctors they can do eye exams for glasses but they do more indepth stuff. Optometrists are not medical doctors. They just do eye exams and check for disease and do eye glass prescriptions. If you do have some kind of eye disease or you need medication or you need an operation on like cataracts then you need the MD guy not strictly the eye glass guy.

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors, just as the person above me stated. They go to medical school and have interships and residencies to go through. Ophthalmologists are surgeons. They are the ones to go to for any type of surgical procedure such as cataracts and refractive surgeries. They also can have different specialities. I worked in an Ophthalmoogist's office and we had a retina specialist, a cornea specialist, a glaucoma specialist, and a pedicatric specialist. Ophthalmologists do not usually refract or fit contact lenses. They deal with the medical and surgical side of the house.

Optometrists are qualified to diagnose and treat certain diseases of the eye and they specialize in maintaining the overall health of the eyes, refracting for glasses and fitting for contact lenses. They perform tests to diagnose problems with the eye, and some will refer out to the Ophthalmologist for further testing and treatment, if they don't have the equipment in their own office. They can also prescribe drops and medications for the eye. Most OD's a fully capable of treating most condtions of the eye and they know when to refer to the specialist if needed.
