The eye focuses light on the retina from two sources, the cornea and the lens. The cornea is the front surface where the lasik, lasek, those surgeries are performed. Those surgeries change the shape of the surface so it focuses light differently.

The lens within the eye, behind the iris is the second refractive part of the eye. This grows with time. It starts out as a sphere of cells, then fills in the center. Then layer after layer of cells are placed over the underlying cells as we get older. As the lens grows, or gets bigger, it becomes stronger and stronger. This is why every few years we need to get new glasses.

If you are nearsighted, then your eyes are already too powerful when compared with 'normal'. Normal eyes, or emmetropic eyes are focused right on the retina. Light from a distance passes through the cornea, then the lens and focuses on the center of the retina, the macula. Your eyes are more powerful than that. The light from a distance is focused more than 'normal' so that it focuses in front of the retina, and as it keeps on going, there's a blur circle on the retina.

How strong is your eye? The numbers are based on the formula P=1/d where the d is in meters.
If your eye is focused already at 1 meter in front of you, then it is +1.00 diopters too powerful and you'd need a -1.00 lens to neutralize that extra power.
If your eye is focused at a half meter in front of you, it'd be +2.00 too powerful and need a -2.00 lens.
A third of a meter, +3.00 too powerful, need a -3.00.
quarter of a meter, need a -4.00
fifth of a meter, -5.00
sixth of a meter, -6.00
tenth of a meter (10 cm) -10.00.

As you age, your lens growth will make you more myopic. That doesn't mean that you are going blind. Just means your eye is more nearsighted and you need more minus power to correct the difference. Chances are you won't get too much beyond -6.00 or so.

At your age, if you do the lasik or lasek or ? surgery, the lens will keep growing and within a year or two or so, you'll again be nearsighted. They can 'adjust' this, but.... don't.

So no need to be scared. People that are farsighted get less far sighted as they age, because their weak eyes just get stronger. But they almost never 'arrive' at neutral, but by the time they do, the lens is so big they can't bend it anyway (actually the little ropes or strings or zonules that hold the lens in place just get lose), and they need to get 'readers'. This happens around 40ish.

Yeah you can get lasik surgery, or take a bunch of vitamin A.

Eat lots of carots!!

By the way, lasik costs about 5000 per eye!!!

Make sure you have good lighting when doing work/reading, less TV or computer?

Just by your basic info, you will not be able to get any type of laser corrective surgery until you are at least 21. Many people's eyes change a lot during the teenage years because they are still developing, 4.5 may seem bad, but you really have a long way to go on the bad vision scale until you should be worried. Just accept the changes and be thankful that you have 6 or 7 years for doctors to further perfect laser surgery.

laser surgery is for adults only. and u should rest your eyes more like sleep or look at faraway objects. dont look at closeup stuff too much like books/computers so take a break once in a while if you do so

it can also be sorta hereditary, and the change also stops at a certain age, i forget what age.

or maybe your specific pair of contacts got problem. i had a pair of new contacts that made me partial near-sighted, so i just threw those away and opened new ones and its fine

you may consult a good doctor for a good quality spectacles...

Laser surgery won't stop it. It will just fix where you are now. If it's going to keep getting worse, it will. There is nothing you can do. Luckily, your vision may plateau when you are 17-18. -4.50 isn't that bad, actually. I've seen people who are -15.00 and still aren't legally blind. Imagine putting a business card right at the end of your nose and not being able to read it. You are only legally blind when you can't see "The Big E" with ALL the correction possible. Next time you are at your optometrist, ask her what that looks like, and she can show you. You'll consider yourself lucky.

Ps, contacts come in powers as high as you would ever need them, so don't worry!

first i ask you have you seen the optician at dept store/chains like pearl, or have you been examined by a real Ophthalmologist which is a md and often a surgeon as well ? i finally saw one last yr and found out i had scratches on my cornea from dry eye evidently i've had this since childhood but the guys who work at dept stores are usually not trained the same nor do they look for it. i use allergy drop and moisture drop once a day now and my vision has improved and i do not find myself rubbing my eyes like i used to. i found out when i was a -6 and -6.5 i just got new glasses and am a 5.5 and 6 so the vision improved ! they also check for degenerative diseases and conditions , and other issues.

Take frequent breaks when doing close up work, keep your eyes moving and try to relax... your a teen so its not that uncommon that your eyes are going a little crazy!

Laser correction doesnt actually fix your eye problem, it basically "burns" (no pun intended) your more recent perscription into your eyes... therefore if your eyes get worse you'll either need further laser treatment to burn a larger perscription into your eyes or just wear glasses

thats why you need to wait till your vision stabilizes in about 5 - 10 years before even considering laser!

good luck!
