Do colored contacts work for people who have dark eyes?!

Yes they will work for you. Your best bet would be the opaque contacts, such as Freshlook Colors. You may also want to try the Freshlook Colorblends; the results won't be as dramatic with them, but they will look a lot more natural. The opaques tend to look somewhat fake if you have dark eyes and try to go super light.
Go see your eye doctor. He/she will need to give you an eye exam if it's been over a year, and he/she will need to measure your pupils if you've never worn contacts before. Then he/she can help you choose a brand of colored contacts based on your pupil size, and what type of effect you're looking for. He/she will also let you try out as many pairs as you like in the office, so you can get a good idea of what you do and don't like. He/she will also let you take home at least one trial pair of contacts. You do need a prescription, even if you have perfect vision, because contacts are considered medical devices, regardless of whether or not they have vision correction in them. Once you have your prescription, you can order your contacts anywhere you choose, online or in a store.

FYI, colored contacts are just as safe as regular contacts, provided you take proper care of them. Your eye doctor will teach you everything you need to know about that.
