They aren't hard to wear at all; once you get used to them they are very comfortable. This could take up to 2 weeks, but when you go to your eye doctor for the exam and fitting (pupil measuring), he will give you a trial pair of contacts to wear for the 2 week trial, to see how you do wearing them. He will train you on insertion/removal of the contacts, and proper cleaning and storing of the lenses when you aren't wearing them. He will also give you your prescription, so you can order your contacts from anywhere you like, online or at an eye doctor's office.
You do need a prescription for colored contacts, even if you don't need vision correction. Contacts are considered medical devices.
In my opinion contact lenses are great. It depends all on the kind you get, though. You really don't feel anything.

when contacts are worn properly you don't feel anything. For me they tend to be dry at times and drops don't help. Overall they are manageable and you'll get used to them quickly
If they are inserted properly you shouldn't be able to feel them at all!
its fine after the first few times of wearing you won't be able to feel them at all.
