I wore my contacts while swimming, and i'm afraid to wear them again?!

Question:

I wore my contacts while swimming, and i'm afraid to wear them again?

I wore them the whole time while swimming in a pond, and i occasionally opened my eyes. They almost popped out once, but i managed to put it back in. I'm wondering if i should wear those contacts lenses again. Are they damaged from the water in the pond? Should I wear them again, or throw them away?

Answers:

I don't think its a good idea to wear them again.
Soft contacts will absorb anything they can! If you swim while wearing contacts or even have tap water get in your eyes you can get an eye infection called Acanthamoeba. "Acanthamoeba is a microbe that is very common in the environment, including in tap water. It has two forms: the trophozoite and the cyst. The infective form is the trophozoite, which can change into a cyst and survive a long time. These trophozoites and cysts can stick to the surface of your contact lenses and then infect your eye."

Apparently this infection is difficult to treat and can cause blindness so i think its best to be safe rather than sorry and throw out your contacts. This microbe can be absorbed into your contact and you will not be able to "clean" it so it comes out. Unless you have daily disposables its better not to swim in your contacts.
