Glucoma?What is Glucoma?

Answers:

Glaucoma is caused by an increase in the patient's IOP (Intra Ocular pressure) There are two types of glaucoma. One is a sudden onset, which can be very painful and can be treated with a laser procedure to immediately relieve the pressure. The other kind is not as serious and can be treated with a prescription drop. This drop will keep your IOP in check.

This is why regular visits to your eye doctor are so important. If left untreated, the build-up of pressure can damage the optic nerve, resulting in a possible loss of vision - particularly your peripheral vision. People who suffer from glaucoma are given regular visual field tests to make sure their peripheral vision isn't being damaged. So it is very important to see your eye doctor on a regular basis so they can detect glaucoma and get you treated.

People with glaucoma also have to watch what other kinds of medications they take. I've seen a TON of commercials for all kinds of new medications for other illnesses and diseases and a lot of them say to make sure you tell your doctor if you are being treated for glaucoma. Certain medications can cause your IOP to rise, and if your IOP is already high due to glaucoma this can be dangerous.
