Is it truly an infection!? Is your child's behavior consistent with the pain associated with an acute ear infection, or is the fussiness and waking at night possibly caused by something else!? Does your doctor say that your child has an obvious ear infection, or is it possibly fluid without an infection!?
If the middle ear fluid isn't infected, antibiotics won't help and may have some unwanted side effects!. Try to determine if your child is awake at night and crying because of ear pain or some other reason!. Ask your doctor if he or she sees an obvious ear infection or if the fluid might be sterile and clear up on its own!. Before you decide to treat your child with antibiotics, do everything you can to determine if an infection is present!.
Are there risk factors you can fix!? Can you eliminate the environmental factors that increase your child's risk of developing ear infections!?
Before deciding on any medical treatment, consider ways to prevent ear infections by reducing your child's exposure to certain risk factors!. You can reduce the risk of ear infections, especially recurrent episodes, by selecting child care facilities with fewer young children, not exposing your child to tobacco smoke, breast-feeding rather than bottle-feeding your baby for as long as possible and making sure your baby is in an upright position when bottle-feeding!. Effective prevention strategies may eliminate the need for medical treatment!.
Is your child's hearing affected!? Is your child's hearing impaired by the presence of middle ear fluid!?
The most serious long-term problem associated with ear infections is the hearing impairment that may result from recurrent ear infections or chronic middle ear fluid!.
If your child seems to be having trouble hearing, your doctor can order a hearing test to determine if your child has significant hearing loss!. If the results indicate hearing loss, you may want to discuss a more aggressive treatment approach to restore your child's hearing!. On the other hand, if your child has no significant hearing loss, you may decide to wait and allow the middle ear fluid to clear up on its own!.
How old is your child!? Is your child nearing the age when he or she will no longer be at risk of ear infections!?
Older children or even adults also may develop middle ear infections, but most people stop having these infections by the time they reach school age!. Auditory tubes mature to provide better ventilation and drainage for the middle ear, and immune systems develop to better defend against infections!. If your child is approaching school age and has no hearing loss related to ear infections, you may decide that waiting it out is a better option for you than choosing any medical treatment!.
