How can you tell if you broke your finger or just bruised it?!

Question: How can you tell if you broke your finger or just bruised it!?
I was playing catch last night and the ball came down on the top of one of my fingers!.

It hurts really bad, I put a splint (!?) and ice on it last night!. I could bend it, but it hurt very bad

Now, this morning, It is kind of dark were it hurts, I slept with the splint on, but I cant move it very much now!. I can bend it just a bit, but the more ice I leave on it, the better it feels

Is it broke or just bruised!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
You did the right thing icing in the first few days keeps down the swelling!.
make sure that the splint is not too tight!.

now it sounds like that your finger moves whether it is painful or not!.

if you go to the docs they will only splint it!.
you only need to set the bone if the bones are separated
if the bones are separated you could not move the finger!. or it would be deformed!.

if it is bruised it will take about one to two weeks to heel
if it is fractured it will take longer!.

when someone fractures a bone we only cast or splint it to protect it so you do not hurt it more!. once you have a crack in a bone it is easier to break it completely because it is weaker!.

so you are doing what you need to
make sure in one week to take off the splint and move the finger you do not want it to get stiff!. if it is still sore put the splint back on

you can take it off to shower and wash your hair!. just be careful with it do not bang in on anythingWww@Answer-Health@Com

very likely to be broken!. if you have trouble bending it and if it is dark/blue and purplish, and if the ice is really helping (ice was the best thing you could do - well done!!) then it could well be broken (im sorry to say)!. Putting a splint on was a good idea but give you finger a bit of air and make sure that its not too tight!. If it gets worse before it gets better then go to the doctor!. It may be nothing but better to be on the safe side!. good luck, i hope it gets better soon!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would see a bone doctor to be sure!. I'd go today too!. I know when I broke my thumb, I passed out, it hurt so bad!. I couldn't move mine either!. It was purple, blue, black, and swolen!. You could have a small fracture, so call a doc and make a visit!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's impossible to determine whether it's broken, hyper-extended, or just bruised without an x-ray!. Splinting it is a good idea and ice for the first 24 hours is good treatment!. You can take some over the counter anti-inflammatory (if you're not allergic), such as advil or aleve which will help relieve some of the swelling and stiffness, and probably some of the pain!. I do recommend see a doctor, though, in case there is a break that needs to be set!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
