In pre-antibiotic times, and especially when most people lived on farms and worked around dirt and animal dung, the hot water was for people to WASH THEIR HANDS! (And also to wash the woman's groin area!. It was found, empirically, that this reduced to incidence of puerperal sepsis!. Peurperal sepsis or "childbirth fever" was a formidable and feared infection that killed up to one in every eight women and babies!. Nowadays, among other things, we call it the "flesh-eating bacteria!." Death was painful, but relatively quick!. Women and babies died within a couple of days!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
