Co-Proxamol was banned from NHS prescription on safety grounds some time ago!. I was delighted and would very much like to see Co-codamol go the same way!. Studies have shown repeatedly that both drugs are at best 5% more potent as analgesics that simple paracetamol!. However their risk/benefit ratio is much poorer!. Co-Proxamol was a potentially dangerous respiratory depressant and really quite addictive!. Co-codamol produces chronic constipation and also headaches and abdominal pain, ( which it is ironically often used to treat! ) and is also addictive!. In general patients who have been taking either of them for any length of time, become convinced that substitutes are less useful, this is a perception mainly caused by the unpleasent withdrawal effects of not taking Co-proxamol/Co-codamol, rather than a lack of potency of the alternative drug!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My dad stood his ground and eventually his GP gave in!. You could change your doctor or contact your local Primary Care Trust as I had to with my daughters medication!. Good luck xWww@Answer-Health@Com

As you no doubt know, it was withdrawn because:

- There appeared to be no benefit over paracetamol or co- codamol in terms of pain relief;
- Some d*^kheads were killing themselves with them!.

Do you have a friend or relation with either medical knowledge or a big mouth!? Or preferably both!? If so, take them along with you to the GP and make a (mild) fuss!.

Or try changing GPs!.

Or ask for a referral to a Chronic Pain Clinic!.

Good luck - it's a terrible situation to be in!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It is no longer licenced for use and It was withdrawn from use by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) in 2007, some patients continued getting it basically until stocks ran out!.

Your GP CAN prescribe it, though the supply of unlicensed co-proxamol is up to your gp, its only at his discretion and is solely his responsibility if you kill yourself with it, either accidentally or on purpose!. Its only prescribed for long term chronic pain, and unless you have tried every single other painkiller on the market, (and there are plenty of others which are stronger and less dangerous), he is not going to even consider prescribing it for you!.

It is addictive and It has caused deaths, thats why it was removed!. It has not been shown to be any more effective than other painkillers, which have less addictive and dangerous qualities!.

Since its been removed, Ive not seen a single prescription for it, and patients who were using it have said that the new drugs they have been given work either just as well or better!.

If you want to complain to the local area authority, go ahead, but you will probably be wasting your time!. The drug is proven to be dangerous, thats why it was removed by the government!. They cant over-ride your doctor, you are his patient and your wellbeing is his responsibility, no-one elses!.

You could maybe approach the senior doctor at the practice, and ask for a meeting with him and your gp, you can explain your point of view, and your gp and the other partner/manager can review it, but unles you fit into the criteria for the drug, he is not going to change his mind just because you kick up a fuss!.

He is making this decision based on his knowledge and experience!. You may not like his decision, but he is making this decision with your health formost in his mind!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My aunt was prescribed co-proxamol for back pain 23 years ago!.
She now needs to take 2 every day or her body cant cope with the side effects!.
Shes not a junkie, shes a very old fashioned 55 year old women!.
Im not being a dick head but maybe your doctor has a reason for not giving them to youWww@Answer-Health@Com
