My wife had one a few years ago!. It is not scary at all, just a hum from the machine!. It isn't loud, you will not get radiation poisoning, the results have to be read by a radiologist and you will find out in a few days!. The huge tube you're thinking of is probably an MRI, which I had several years ago!. No problem with those either!.

They lie you on a narrow platform!. It gets a little tight, and some people will get a little paranoid - just keep your eyes closed!. The platform will move you into a cylinder type space
Expect to see some lights flashing and hear some banging noises (kind of like hail on a metal door)!.
Just lie still!. It usually doesn't take longer than 45 minutes!. You can ask them to play music for you if you like!.
