Addiction to cigarettes is part chemical, part physical. If your body chemically is not telling you that a cigarette is needed, but outside forces like stress tell you it is; it stands to reason that hlding the cigarette and going through the motions will stimulate th brain in much the same way as actually smoking by supressing the necessity through phsical action.

yea they put an unlit cig in their mouth because it feels normal

I don't think so in there. The cigs cost to much to play with

I suggest holding a pencil. It's a lot cheaper.

For many people, it's the habit more than the nicotine that is addictive. Having the physical prop at hand is indeed calming.

that's weird....
i never heard about that....
hahaha....
lols =p

never heard of that, probably do it to fit in more than to calm down

Holding it will not calm anyone's nerves...don't be fooled...people are actually smoking the cigs....

Oral fixation, nervous thing, I think...I smoked for over 30 years and didn't enjoy or finish one butt!!!

True smoking is habitual, psychological, and physiological. Your hands holding the cig is habitual. Thats why people tend to chew on pens and stuff when they are trying to quit.

Those people who hold cigarettes in their mouths without lighting them up are usually smokers, but may be in a place where they cannot smoke. To combat their craving, they will stick an unlit cigarette in their lips because it does calm them. Just the feeling in their mouths is better than nothing.

Yes because its just the fact that the person has the cigarette that calms them down, not the smoking of it.

I've heard of this too, they hold it in their hand as a form or pre-occupation, most smokers smoke mostly out of boredom and find that simply holding the cig, either in their hand or mouth (not lit) calms them.

Well....thats very interesting i never knew that probley becuz im not a smoker. I would say that if they are addicted or under pressure they would.

Yea, that does make sense, though I've never heard anything about that.
This would probably apply to a recovering nicotine addict, where they would just hold the ciggarette there to help calm their nerves because it's the first step to smoking the ciggarette, is to hold it in your hand, but never to actually light it, because they're trying to kick the habit.

Smoking is more of a psychological addiction for some people than it is a physical addiction.

When I quit smoking, just holding a pen calmed me down quit a bit.

So, for some people that are trying to quit, or are in a place or situation that they are unable to quit, holding an unlit cigarette may be very calming.

It is possible that it may work to calm their nerves for a while, but in the long run I don't believe they can just keep holding the cigarette without lighting it. My parents both smoke and have since they were really young. When they started smoking it was before it was known that cigarettes were harmful. And they have both tried to quit smoking at least 5 times a year since I was young and they've tried everything. And I can't see them just holding the cigarette in their hands and not smoking it. The addiction just seems too strong. But if it works for some people then more to them.

As a former smoker who smoked for over 40yrs I can tell you it is different for each individual. I know some people who have done that and said it works for them, others replaced
the cigarette with gum or suckers or hard candy. Myself
the only thing that worked was to be kept in a no smoking
environment with no way to get a cigarette or be around a smoker. As long as I kept my mind and hands busy the with-drawls weren't very bad. It's been 2yrs since I quit and
once in a great while a have a small urge to have a cigarette.
*Have also known people who have been hypnotized to quit.
