Microfracture surgery... return to high inpact sports...?!

Question: I may have to be having microfracture done to my patella in 3 weeks, i was wondering if anyone knew how long the recovery was, and when i would be able to return to competitive cheerleading?
The season starts in August but i would need to be able to jump and stunt by the beginning of October. Tumbling would be great but not necessary at that time...

I plan on asking my doc these questions too, but was wondering if any one has had this experience and could share their stories... thanx

Also, my doc thinks i may have a torn ACL as well... and if that is the case i know that recovery would be much longer but i wont know for sure until i go back in 3 weeks...

here are my symptoms:
*swelling
*instability in knee(knee feels as though it may buckle again)
*max ROM 75*(after that knee feels like its gonna pop out of place...and "locks" up)
*tenderness around patella and along medial aspect of knee
*inability to bear weight without immobolizer on
thanks again

With either of those surgeries you are looking at a MINIMUM of 6 months for return to sport. There is a better chance that if you only have ACL reconstruction surgery that you would get back to cheerleading in 6 months. The microfracture surgery can work but has more variability to it in regards to returning to a high level of sports. There are several Professional athletes who have had the microfracture surgery and are playing just fine, but its not as sure a thing as just having ACL reconstruction (not to say that ACL surgery is a 100% sure thing). Best of luck with things and put a lot of effort into your physical therapy after!
