It sounds like a Baker's Cyst. When too much synovial fluid is present in the knee it can cause a bulge (cyst) in the back of the knee. The cysts are usually caused by some kind of knee ailment such as arthritis or injury. The condition itself is usually not serious. Tell your mom to visit a doctor to rule out something more serious. i am not sure what it is but you should go to the doctor straight away, it could be something serious
What you describe is probably a Baker's cyst. It is a fluid filled cyst formed due to accumulation of fluid in the knee joint. It is a harmless condition but may require removal of the fluid by a needle (your GP can do it) if it causes discomfort.
