Is it true that you might not wake up from total anesthesia?!

Question: Is that true? I am having surgery and I am freaked out by the whole thing what would you recommend? I really would prefer to not be awake.

We call it General Anesthesia. You will wake up when the procedure is finished.

The chance of not doing so is extremely rare, and for patients in whom that is a reasonable possibility, we tell them that ahead of time.

Depending on the surgery you are having, consider a spinal. You can be sedated so that you don't remember anything and sleep through much of it, but you won't need a breathing tube/ventilator or as many drugs to keep you comfortable.

If you want to talk to an anesthesiologist ahead of time, call the hospital and ask to speak to one. We're usually happy to dispel and fears and tell you what to expect.

Good luck with the surgery.

There is always a chance of death, brain damage or the like from anesthesia, but it is pretty uncommon and they are medical professionals.

Just be calm, they are sworn to do no harm and will do their best for you.

Modern anesthesia is wonderful. You will probably not even be aware when they put you to sleep. And, you'll wake up with no after affects.

Don't worry.

It has been proven that if you go under general anesthesia (normal for surgerys) there is a small risk that the patient won't wake up.

yes, it is true, but it is rare, anesthesiologists are highly trained and will do everything in their power to wake you up. i have been put out two times and both times i have woken up.

It's true, but extremely uncommon. I've been put under twice, and both times I suffered no side effects, except a little grogginess the second time. Don't worry about it, just relax and they'll have you count down and you'll count about 2 numbers and then you'll wake up and wonder what happened =p

I have been in hospital 6 times, had 8 operations and a sedative and still here to tell the tale. No need to freak out. If they are operating you wouldn't want to be awake as you could see what they were doing and then you would freak out.
