I had an appendectomy 2 days ago, and now I'm really sore, should I go to th!

Question: I recently had an appendectomy and they opened me up no laproscopy. I came home form the hospital yesterday and was hurt but today the pain seems worse. I keep reading how the surgery is so minr, but my side really hurts. I have to walk really timidly and upon release the doctor was not in and I got no instruction on how to take care of myself or what to look for. Are my symptoms ordinary, also I know the stitched my skin, but is thee stitches underneath that may be painful. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

we bruise you up pretty good when we do an appy.
the little incision you have is nothing compared to what we made it DO while the surgery was going on.
kind of like childbirth :)
We use retractors and things to stretch it wide enough to pull out the naughty bit of bowel, clip off the appy, pursestring it back together and shove it back in.
Which... is not really what your bowel was meant to do. It likes where it was juuuuust fine. and doesnt like to be messed with.
So take into consideration that we played Silly String with your insides for a tiny bit, and stretched that 2 inch incision to about 4 inches before stitching it back closed...
and your body Hates Us For Doing It.
only you get to feel the aftereffects.

being sore is Completely Normal.
SEVERE pain and fevers and vomiting are not, so keep an eye out for those (we DID open up your bowel after all. dirty in there.)

take it easy, dont exert yourself, and try not to lift anything heavier than a phone book for the next... eh week or so.
Just to keep things Kosher.

Oh and: the stitches they put Inside are dissolvable and have already started degrading... they go completely away in 7-21 days depending on what specific type they used. So if on the offchance you are bothered by them, it will go away when they do.

cheers and good luck with a speedy recovery!
NO FOOT RACES! :)

(also: nobody is going to holler at you for calling them about postop concerns, so when in doubt: call the surgeons office, they've got an answering service or someone on call who can field your concerns.)

Your Healing Dont be A pussy. go get the pain meds the dr scriped you!!!! The time 2 worry is when you are passing blood....

wow sorry to hear that someone else got no post op instructions. I was under anathestic for 5 hours for dental work and got no post op even though I had some complications. Geez do you have a nurseline or something in your area you could phone? You could always go to the ER to get checked out. There are lots of people that go for nothing and you have just had surgery so I say you are entitled

OUCH! Yes, being sore is completely normal. Regardless if it was "minor" or not, they cut open your body and removed part of your insides! You are going to be in a bit of pain for a week or so. The nurses should have given you instructions prior to discharging you. You need to rest and take some pain medication...they should have given you a prescription. You might have internal stitches as well as external...I don't know the extent of your surgery. Try calling the hospital and ask to speak to a SDS (same day surgery) nurse. They can give you more specific instructions. Here is some info I got off the web:

Recovery from the Operation

You will remain in the recovery room for about one hour after your appendectomy. If you had an open appendectomy, you will be up and walking within six hours. Expect to be discharged from the hospital
