How do you know if you need stitches?!

Question: I was opening a contact lens bottle at work that was sealed by metal. They are tricky to open cause if you don't get the plastic top off enough it doesn't peel the whole metal off. Well I was peeling the metal back and I slashed my finger open. It is the size of a small line and no bone is showing. It was just bleeding a lot and it dripped all on my desk. Now I just feel so queezy from the whole thing. I'm also embarassed and hope no one saw it. I didn't want to make a big deal over it.

fingers and heads bleed more than it seems like it should. I've cut my finger on those damn things too. if it looks deep, and doesn't seem to heal, go see the doctor. you are probably fine. you know your body better than any of us. has it stopped bleeding? if you feel you need stitches, go to the doctor. feel better.

if u have a cut and it bleeds and bleeds and bleeds u need sutures... easy as that

Sounds like you need stitches and maybe even a tetanus shot, being embarrassed should be the least of your worries.

Don't worry about what other people think, accidents happen all the time and you should really watch your health.

If it will not stop bleeding go see a doctor. If it quit bleeding you might want to keep a band-aid on it for a few days!

if it doesn't stop after applying pressure and raising it over you heart fow a 1/2 hour than you have to get stitches. alot of people get queezy, just sit for a few minutes and drink fluid and you should be fine.

ive gotten stiches once, needed them many more times....
youll be fine either way, if you want go get them!

Fingers heal quickly b/c of all the blood supply they get. I am concerned that you got cut on metal - you might want to consider a tetanus shot if you haven't had one in the past 10 years.

If you wait too long to get it checked out you won't be able to get stitches - but they usually just glue it with special surgical glue nowadays.

I really can't say whether you need to get it checked out or not without seeing it, but you should wash the cut well with soap and water and put neosporin (antibiotic ointment) on it, and a bandaid. Change the bandaid whenever it gets wet and keep putting the neosporin on it so it doesn't get infected.

If you bandaged it and it is STILL not stopping bleeding, go to the Emergency room and then they will stitch it up.

If it's more than two inches, then I'd say get stitches. I've had deep cuts like that before, but never gotten stitches and I turned out fine. Don't worry, you'll live. And like my great Opa always said, "It'll go away before you get married". Unless you're already married, then it's too late. just joshing haha.

Aww dont be embarassed darl, i cut my finger on one of those ring top pull cans making breakfast at home. That was embarassing, cause it seemed like i couldnt even do that properly lol. Anyway i ended up with 5 stitches in my index finger and now have nerve damage to that area. You need to report the incident anyway to management because even if the cut didnt need stitches there is a chance that the cut could have gotton infected. Cuts that need stitches are usually deep and can bleed a fair bit. You will know if the cut is deep compared to a surface scrape. If you need stitches there is nothing to be ashamed about and you wont be making a big deal by asking if you can have it looked at. You're just looking after your health which is important. At this stage i wouldnt be able to advise you of whether you need stitches as i cant see the wound but i would seek medical advice just incase.
