What is a hernia like?!

Sorry, ribuckeye, but hernias occur in people who aren't born with them. Some are congenital, but some aren't. Hernias can occur in several different places .A hernia is a weakness in a muscle which causes the muscle to separate. This allows the tissues behind the muscle to bulge through. It usually feels like a small lump at first which may or may not be reducible (meaning you can push the bulge back in).
Hernias of the abdomen usually grow over time and can become quite large. Dangerous complications may occur if a loop of intestine comes through and becomes trapped. This deprives that part of the intestine of blood and can cause death of that loop of intestsine. Surgery is the only way to permanently fix a hernia.
a hernia is something that you are born with. if you are not born with a hernia than you don't have one. it is a hole in the tissue that just never came together. if you take a piece of bubble gum and blow it up a little and then stretch it out with your hands and it is not a solid piece, but has a hole in it than you will get the idea of what a hernia looks like. now part two. most people,(men in particular) will get a rupture, which is not the same as a hernia, but will give you some pain. it depends on where the rupture occurs as to how severe the pain and if it is ignored it can cause a lot of trouble. if you think you have one, go see a doctor and let him or her test you for it. take care of it asap and you will be a lot better off for it.
Husband just had 3 repaired. Went in thinking only had one doc said surprise 2 more he got these from work lifting heavy objects. The one on his stomach (umbilical) did get larger over a 3 month period till i made him go to doc. It was a bulgeing in the belly button that you could push in with your finger and would push back out by the way he yelled when doing this said hurt like h*ll. If you think you have one you need to get to the doctor and have it checked. Good Luck!

While you can be born with a hernia, you can also develop one if you stress your body too much. Generally you will get a hernia if you are lifting heavy things.
You may or may not be able to feel a bump. If you have a hernia you will be in a lot of pain all the time though. You may just have strained something if it goes away after a week or so.
If you have pain in your abdominal region for a prolonged period of time or have any kind of large bumps below your skin I would recommend seeing a doctor as soon as possible.
