Hypersomnia and anesthesia?!


Question: what risks (if any) are there for a patient with hypersomnia (sleeping at least 15hrs a day with daytime somniance)? also does having a severe head cold (with a lot of congestion) complicate things; like being put under or intubated?

I really don't know what effects anesthesia would have on hypersomnia and vice versa. I'd guess that you might take longer to wake up, and your anesthetic requirements might be reduced.

Upper respiratory infections increase the risk of respiratory complications. You might end up in the ICU on a ventilator. We like to have patients wait 2-3 weeks after symptoms have resolved before we anesthetize them. If the case is elective, it should be postponed. It's stupid to risk pneumonia, bronchospasm or death because of a cold.

Fortunately, Anesthesia risks are uncommon. I would ask your physician if there are any concerns passed on your sleeping condition and the other concerns. Here is a link you can read if you would like more information:
