As so many other answerers have provided, check out the IHS site. As long as you are an enrolled tribal member/citizen of a federally recognized tribe you will be able to receive health services from a Indian Health Services clinic. It is not insurance, just a clinic where you can receive free services due to your tribal citizenship. (Heritage alone does not qualify you, you must be enrolled.) Depending on where in the US you live, there might be an IHS clinic down the road or miles (possibly hundreds) away.

I would contact your tribal counsel for info on this.

See:

United States Department of Health and Human Services Department of Indian Health Service
http://www.ihs.gov/

This website explains in detail what the qualifications are and what you need to do to apply.

"Eligibility Requirements for Health Services from the Indian Health Service

The most common standard applied for eligibility for health services from the Indian Health Service is that the individual is an enrolled member of a Federally recognized Tribe.

The following is part of the Indian Health Service Manual text that sets forth the policies, standards, and procedures for determining those persons who come within the scope of the Indian Health program:

Indian Health Service Manual

Part 2 -- Services to Indians and Others

Chapter 1 -- Indians

2-1.2 PERSONS TO WHOM SERVICES MAY BE PROVIDED

A person may be regarded as within the scope of the Indian Health program if he is not otherwise excluded therefrom by provision of law, and:

1. Is of Indian and/or Alaska Native descent as evidenced by one or more of the following factors:
(1) Is regarded by the community in which he lives as an Indian or Alaska Native;

(2) Is a member, enrolled or otherwise, or an Indian or Alaska Native Tribe or Group under Federal supervision;

(3) Resides on tax-exempt land or owns restricted property;

(4) Actively participates in tribal affairs;

(5) Any other reasonable factor indicative of Indian descent, or

2. Is an Indian of Canadian or Mexican origin recognized by any Indian tribe or group as a member of an Indian community served by the Indian Health program; or

3. Is a non-Indian woman pregnant with an eligible Indian's child for the duration of her pregnancy through post partum (usually 6 weeks); or

4. Is a non-Indian member of an eligible Indian's household and the medical officer in charge determines that services are necessary to control a public health hazard or an acute infectious disease which constitutes a public health hazard. "

i would recommend that you talk to your health re provider for offers on health care.they provide you the latest info. on health care that will benifit you and your life style.

They may have been telling you about the US Dept of Health end Hyman Services Indian Health Service. Here is the URL:
www.ihs.gov/

Check out this site http://www.ihs.gov/ they may be able to point you in the right direction. Be prepared to prove that you are in fact American Indian.

I'm not sure about health insurance per se, but health services may be free. You might want to check out this link to Indian Health Services: http://www.ihs.gov/ and/or find a Health Service office near you.
