I have trouble getting to sleep at night?!

Question:

I have trouble getting to sleep at night?

Every night I have alot of trouble getting to sleep. Its like as soon as I hit the pillow my mind just starts racing with the most random thoughts. Can someone suggest what I can do about this??

Answers:

There are several things that you can try, such as progressive relaxation, a warm bath before bed, a glass of milk (this has L-Tryptophane in it which causes tiredness- it's the same thing in Turkey meat). Alcohol may help you fall asleep but it actually decreases Rapid Eye Movement (REM-dream) sleep. Sometimes reading before bed can help because it takes your mind off daily events, especially if it's pleasant such as a romance novel or something that you enjoy.
You might consider melatonin supplements at night, 1-3mg. It is a natural chemical produced in the brain and can be found in the vitamin section. I take it nightly and it works great for me. You should check with a doctor though if you take any other medications first.

You also might want to address what may be causing you stress if you think it may cause your racing thoughts. If it is causing significant trouble in your life and effecting you daily functional activity, consult with a Doctor or therapist. You might try a short trial of a prescription medication (such as Ambien or Lunesta). Make sure that you know exactly what you are putting in your body.
Also, I don't know your age, but intimacy can also have a positive effect in helping you fall asleep. Good Luck!
