Question:

When someone's hearing aid is constantly "squealing" what exactly is the problem?

Lots of my clients have hearing aids and some of them are always squealing. My clients are oblivious to this but it drives me crazy.

Answers:

As some people have mentioned, the volume being too loud can be a problem, but that isn't the only source of feedback. A poor fitting ear mold or crack in either the mold or the tubing can also cause feedback, as can wax blocking the vent in the ear mold. Finally, newer digital hearing aids frequently have feedback cancellation software, if your clients have newer digital aids and they are still squealing, if could be that the software for that feature has not been correctly set up.

Turning the volume down may solve the symptom, but it results in a poorer result for the wearer. Therefore, all these other little quirky things should be investigated to see if the feedback can be eliminated while keeping the volume at the most comfortable (and not lower) level for the wearer
