i was told they only remove tonsils in extreme cases anymore. extreme being a severe problem arising at least once a month due to the tonsils.

i typically get a bad case of tonsillitis once a year, and by bad i mean, i can't talk, its hard and sometimes nearly impossible to breath and i'm basically on a liquid diet for the time being, usually a week or two. sometimes it gets so bad that i end up in the emergency room and they have to hook an I.V. to me, ive seen specialist and they all say the same thing.

I am happy that I can give my opinion on that subject. It's gonna be long....I will first tell you about myself and then I will answer your question. Take note that taking your tonsils out is a big deal - you are removing a part of your body. Do not rush your decision.

So when I was 13-14 I've had a angina every two weeks. I was healthy for 2 weeks then I was ill the next 2 weeks. This up and down swing continued for a almost a year so it became uncontrollable. All kind of antibiotics stopped working and I had to be treated with injection antibiotics. Doctors said they must remove my tonsils because they are infected from the inside. I had an operation, everything went well I was down for a week then i recovered. I have never ever had a sore throat since then. I was a new man. I felt great. I even got fat because my body was not used to being healthy all the time. I had to start training to loose the fat and I was feeling great.

Here comes the bad part ... The tonsil's purpose is to be a filter like a sponge. Whenever a virus/bacteria wents through your moth , the tonsil catches it so it doesn't enter your stomach or your lungs. So now every time I get a cold or a flu it goes in my lungs and I get a bronchitis. Once on 2-3 years I catch a pneumonia. I just recovered from my last pneumonia and it was really bad. I was ill for 20 days.

So I advise you to double and triple check everything. See at least 3 doctors and get their opinion. Never ever get your tonsils out if you can afford to leave them as they are now. You can allways remove them but you can never get them back. Remove them only if they are chronically ill.

Removing them is really easy. You get anesthesia and the operation is about 10 mins. You get a sore feeling in your throat. The third tonsil is removed from your nose. If you have a tiny nose opening your nose might hurt also.

In conclusion to my answer I strongly advise you do not remove your tonsils unless there is no other way !
