What you are experiencing are called Sleep starts also known as hypnic or hypnagogic jerks!. They are sudden, brief and strong contractions of the body or one or more body segments!. They happen as you are falling asleep!. They may occur with a sensation that you are falling, hallucinations, or a flash of light!.

Sleep starts usually consist of one strong jerk that affects much of the body!. The arms and legs are most likely to be affected!. If you are fatigued it can bring them on more but they happen to every one occasionally!. The cause for sleep starts are unknown, but common hypothesis is that while the muscles are relaxing the brain misinterprets this as falling and the brain signals our limbs to wake up- thus the jerking!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Babies are born with a similar startle reflex called the Moro reflex!. Many believe it is a hangover from that and that when we reach that state between waking and sleep we revert to this instinctive reflex if startled!.
