Should abortions be available on the nhs?!

Question: my question refers to abortions carried out for non-medical reasons.

the way i see it, the nhs is already overstretched as it is. doctors' job is to cure, heal, treat people - not to sort out their social lives.

why not make abortion and contraception available on the market instead?

Abortions are available on the NHS. And rightly so. The NHS may be overstretched, but imagine the even bigger burden of supporting women who don't want to be mothers, and ask yourself exactly why the NHS provides abortions. Before the legalisation of abortion in the late 1960s, women were still having abortions, and they were often in unsanitary non-sterile conditions which were a danger to their life.

The serial killer John Christie told at least 2 of his victims he would perform an abortion for them.

I agree abortion is not an ideal method of contraception, and should not be seen as such. I think the law should be upheld, and not routinely ignored - ie a clinical need for an abortion should be demonstrated, and that a woman's current family should be considered; if she already has one or more children, surely one more is no great detriment to her?

I understand why you would say that but think that a lot of poor and uneducated girls would end up going to back stree abortionists, or a lot of unwanted children would be born into an unwelcoming world. So on balance, I would have to vote no.

i thought they were. THINK ABOUT IT, HOW MUCH MORE MONEY WOULD IT COST TO RAISE AN UNWANTED CHILD ON BENEFITS than an abortion??? let me know when you wake up.

Yes, of course, do you seriously want to return to the nightmare days of back-street abortion? Do a little research into the horror stories from back then!

No way abortions should be on the NHS. Contraception already is, so if protection isn't used why should the tax payer fork out (again) for someone's mistake?

And don't you think we will then have another million or so immigrants coming over for abortions? They already come here to have their babies......

Think about it... back to the dark ages... If people are charged for contraception..... Will they use it NO.. consequence increased pregnancy rates and increase STI's..

Then with higher unwanted pregnancies.. and no alternative... welcome back to the back street abortionists... consequence.. increased death rate in women.

You might not agree with terminations but if they are going to be done then we need to make sure it is regulated..

If you think stopping contraception and nhs terminations will make some people sort out their lives then you are totally delusional..

Society as a whole is going to the dogs and the first step in regulating anything is making people take responsibility for their own actions..
