When you sneeze why do people say?!

Question: bless you

Answers: bless you

People are right on about the plague. Thats how it started... HOWEVER, it also comes from the belief that when you sneeze, you lose a day of your life, saying bless you gives you the day back... but that belief came from the time of the plague too... its become proper manners now due to this.

Now heres a question for you... Do you know why we touch glasses when we say cheers? :):)

(In old times, when two kings had dinner together for meetings, one would pour some of his drink in the others glass, and then he would pour some back, so if one of the drinks were poisoned, it would kill both. it was a gesture of good faith to do so... after awhile, Kings became either drunk of lazy, and instead of pouring, they would tap glasses hard enough for it to spill into each others glasses...

its another example of how things were thought of at one point in history, and how we still practice these things out of sheer habit and manners now... its interesting to know, yes?)

Because it used to be a an initial symptom of the plague so people would say "bless you" in fear that they had fallen victim to an incurable disease.

It goes back to the days of the Plague (England 1600's)

Sneezing was considered a "sign" of possible infection and "Bless You " was thought to offer protection.

because 'Apparently' ages ago when the black plague started and people sneezed people thought they had the plague so they said 'bless you' (basically let god bless you)

scientifically if u sneeze u r relieved of ur bacterias or such parasites that is in ur nose.....may be u r blessed but the person near u will be a cursed one if he gets the disease from ur sneezing....

God bless you

My fiance always says, "ew", even though his sneezes shake the house.

Although i never heard of the plague thing i think it's pretty cool. I heard that back in the day when you sneezed it was beleived that your soul was shot out of your body through your open mouth and people said 'bless you' or 'God bless you' so that God would send it back to you.

You're so good looking (from Seinfeld).

Its different in all parts of the world.Of course sneezing since old times was considered to be symptom of disease but in all parts of the world people say other things than only bless you.

That is a frequent question, it refers to the middle ages, when sneezing was sometimes the first symptom of plague. The bless you, was literally part of a blessing to protect you, as it wa thought then that many diseases were a punishment from god. It was also the origin of the nursery rhyme 'Ring-a-ring a roses.'

because when you sneeze you can't breathe and they say bless you to say thank god your okay. like achoo...bless you.

well you do need a blessing Coz what u did last night was truly sinful!!!!!!!!!!!
