What do you think? So ive had weight problems my whole life. I am now 17...?!

Question: In 7th grade, i was about 5 ft 1 & 130 lbs. Through exercise & dieting, I went down to 105. I was actually skinny. In 9th grade, I got type 1 diabetes & nearly died. After recovering, I gained about 3 lbs. In 10th grade, I didn't take care of myself at all & let my blood sugars get out of control and nearly went into a diabetic coma again. That year, I gained 12 lbs after recovering. Then 11th grade, I didn't take care of myself very well at all either. I didn't almost go into a diabetic coma again, my blood sugars were just high a lot of the time. I ended up gaining 10 more lbs. This year, my blood sugars are in control & I haven't gained any weight. I guess my question is did I gain weight because of diabetes? I've tried researching this & found out that insulin spikes can cause weight gain. I am just so sick and depressed about my body. Weight has been a battle & it feels like I've been robbed of the body I worked hard to achieve. im trying to lose weight again, but its hard.

I understand your plight.

Diabetes does cause weight gain because it makes your body unable to convert the sugar you eat into fat and then get it burned off as energy.

But don't be disheartened - just commit to do exercise and eat a healthy diet consistently; you'll get to control your blood sugar and your weight.

Don't go on a roller coaster kind of exercising and dieting like what you've been doing (i.e. let go of your diet and don't exercise; then go back to exercise & diet; then again let go....)

You can control your diabetes thru diet and exercise does help to bring down your blood sugar level because when you exercise, your body uses glucose for the activity, so it lowers your glucose levels in your blood.

One thing you must know - exercise cannot normalize your glucose levels, but it can effectively counteract increased glucose levels which occur after eating.

Do cardio exercise because it kickstarts your metabolism higher so you burn off more glucose. Do 3-4 times per week for at least 20 mins per session for a start and see how it goes with you.

Gradually increase to at least 30 mins per session and 4-5 times per week, when your body's stronger for more exercise.
