How come we use urine creatinine when caclucating GFR ?!


Question: How come urine creatinine is a good index to use when calculating GFR? I am not sure why and would like a good explaination of it.

Creatinine is a waste product of muscle metabolism from creatine, waste product meaning it goes straight to the kidneys, however when the glomerular function is compromised creatinine isn't cleared by the kidneys so a low urine creatinine means a dysfunctional kidney.
