What is wrong with my friends vocal chords?!
Question: She is from another country and has a thick accent. Her voice is very scratchy. I thought it was kinda sexy in a way. She told me she has a medical condition from "not breathing when she talks" and "using too much breath pressure." She smokes almost a pack a day and is 24 years old. She doesn't sing...Oh and she doesn't do drugs. To me it sounds like she might have a cyst or something. She has been to the doctor and he told her it was too much breath pressure when she talks, and that she doesn't breathe right. What do you think?

take her to a ears, nose, and throat doctor. they might be able to tell you something.
Never heard of too much breath pressure. The smoking has the affect of drying out the membranes of the throat and that sounds like it could be what she really has been going through. Get her to stop for a few weeks and see if it helps. My friend was a heavy pipe smoker for many years and had the same condition.
