Question: I have to get a hep A injection soon and I have heard someone say that it is a particularly nasty vaccine.

I didn't think it was bad.
Maybe, whoever told you that was thinking about the Tetanus vaccine. THAT hurts! It isn't so bad at the time, but it feels sore and bruised for a couple of days after. Mine even made my underarm hurt.
