Is 96 body temp of gor 7 month old??!
Question: My son has been sick for a few days, everyone in the house has been sick. Well for a few days his temp was 102. Today is was 96. Is 96 normal for a baby at 7 months?? Do you think I should take him in to the doctor?? It went from 102 yesterday to 96 today?? Ive tried 2 different thermometers and both said 96, and I am taking it rectally. Thank You

I am providing links to some pages I found that discuss body temp. It seems pretty well established that there are many people whose 'normal' is as low as 97. However, 96 starts getting a little too low and the cause of the low temp may be something to look for if there are other problems accompanying (lethargy, lack of appetite etc).
As a mom my main concern would be that this is a 7 month old child whose 'normal' has been closer to the 98.6 we normally think of and is now 96. If this were say my 14 yr old or my husband I might give them a day or two in bed, feeding them and babying them to let them recover from the recent illness. But with the little ones I tend to get the Doctor in on the party just as soon as I start feeling uncomfortable. It's just too important.
Hope that helps!
Alot of people and children, small babies included run 96 as their normal. I dont think it is anything to worry about, unless he seems to be feeling worse.
Some people have naturally lower body temps but this may be low for him. I would definitely take him to the doctor and keep him in warm clothes and a blanket. Most normal body temp is 98.6.
if it went down that much, the fever "broke" . . . 98.6 is an average for body temperature ~ some people run hotter than others some colder . . . did you happen to take your son's temp before he was ill for any reason? if you did, you might have a baseline and a guideline to determine if he has a temp . . . i personally have a mean temp of 99.5 normally and my daughter's is 99.2 and her mom's is 96.4 . . . so if you know the "base temp", you'll know how bad the fever is: if 96 = "normal" 102 is fairly serious and needs immediate care and a call to the doctor . . .
