Nits are baby bug eggs, that will hatch into head lice. They are attached to the hair strands, and it's not that easy to simply pick one out. You also never have just one. They are most likely found on the hair shafts at the nape of the neck and behind the ears. But to have nits, you have to have head lice first. Sand is possible if you have been on the beach. It shouldn't be that difficult to tell the two apart. More than likely what you are seeing is simply skin from your scalp. It just means you need to wash the shampoo out of your hair a little better, scrub your head a bit better, or use a shampoo for dry scalp problems.
