In normal surgery if you are getting any sort of sedation (nitrous) you cannot eat for 6 hrs prior to the medication and that is only a light meal- toast, juice, etc. If you are wanting to eat a heavy meal-burger, etc. than it would be 8 hrs. If you are only getting a local anesthetic (a numbing shot) then you can eat. Yes you are correct in that sedation, especially nitrous, can make you vomit. The concern with that is if you are sleepy and vomit, you could inhale that and get pneumonia which could be life threatening.
If you do eat, they will probably decide to just give you the shot which means you will hear them doing everything and feel the vibrations of them cutting then pulling them out. Which is worse? Not eating and getting to sleep through it or eating and being aware of that? I'd skip the food.
it depends on the type of anesthetic as to if you can eat BEFORE or not. If you're being 'put under' - aka, general anesthetic, then you can't eat. However, if you're just being sedated, you can eat right up until the surgery, as long as you brush beforehand so you have a clean mouth for the removal. If you're only getting novacaine, then there's not problem at all. If you're getting a combination sedated removal - ie, taking valium an hour before hand, novacaine and 'laughing gas' during the procedure - then you can eat, but just a light breakfast & lunch.

If you are only getting nitrous you can eat. I'd eat about 2 hours before hand. They won't kill you. And don't worry about what the other people are saying... I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed and was wide awake on nitrous and felt and watched everything. Also, i'm a dental assistant. Every dentist is different though, so i'd call in the morning to make sure you can or can't eat. I don't know if you are also getting an IV too or not.
I advise not eating or drinking anything at least 8 hours prior to wisdom teeth extraction. It's easier to give anesthesia on an empty stomach.
don't eat or drink 12 hours before
